If you missed South End Open Studios, First Fridays are the next best thing; visiting with Ann Strassman & John Gonnella by Shem Tane (Artscope is proud of its intern program which has an end goal of helping area college students polish their writing, reporting and research skills to help develop the next generation of art reviewers and critics. We also think this provides a valuable insight to artists and galleries to see what kind of first impressions they give those students who’ve invested their lives to find their place amongst their profession.) Last month, I traveled down to Boston’s SoWa neighborhood to take in the South End Open Studios. I was expecting the gallery to be set up in one room with each artist standing by their work. Instead the gallery was split up among different rooms and floors. Traveling down the semi-florescent floors reminded me of … [Read more...] about Sunday at the SoWa

Untangled
Percy Fortini-Wright: Entangled Lines at the Copley Society of Art by Shem Tane Using acrylic or spray paint, the art style of Percy Fortini-Wright’s, whose “Entangled Rhymes” exhibition opened last Thursday, Oct. 8, at Boston’s Copley Society of Art, focuses on the background of the urban environment. His latest works are heavily rooted in black and white contrast and how each color interacts with each other; graffiti has been one of his main influences in his catalog of work. In creating one piece, “My Left Hand Stuck in the Matrix, I'm the Apex I steal Science off Spaceships,” he said that he strived to combine, “the feeling of order and chaos.” The perspective of the piece is slightly distorted, with the diagonal border between the cityscape and the checker floor. The perspective itself also creates the image to be compressed, yet expansive with the collection of … [Read more...] about Untangled
Wanderlust: Spain
By James Foritano (When he’s not covering the visual and theatrical arts for artscope, Mr. Foritano has been know to travel the world in search of new experiences — sometimes as an observer, other times as a participant. In this instance, he’s a bit of both during his recent trip overseas, which he shares with you here.) Ah, Spain! An inebriation of art and a delightful puzzle of custom and culture. I was just drumming my fingers whilst waiting crankily for another assignment from Artscope when I summarily decided to go abroad on a busman’s holiday after Elder Hostel, which has recently changed its name to the more racy Road Scholar, slipped an invitation through the mail slot for a jaunt to nearly all the more artistically blessed sights in Spain. It seemed to be a summons, so we soon found ourselves in Madrid where any soul the least sensitive to beauty finds itself … [Read more...] about Wanderlust: Spain
In Review: South End Open Studios 2015
By Emily Pysczynski (Artscope is proud of its intern program which has an end goal of helping area college students polish their writing, reporting and research skills to help develop the next generation of art reviwers and critics. We’re happy to feature the newest member of our staff her on the artscope zine) South End Boston, Mass. - It was wonderful to get to meet so many incredibly talented artists at the SOWA Open Studios event this year. There was so much to see and so many interesting people to meet that it was hard to ever leave. Two artists based at 450 Harrison Ave. left quite an impression on me when I stepped into their studios, and I came away from this event loving art more than I ever knew I did. When I think of distortions, I typically call to mind abstract works that stretch beyond reality or possibly transform the ordinary into something comical. However, B. … [Read more...] about In Review: South End Open Studios 2015

Artscope revisits: John Pagano
By J. Fatima Martins Worcester, Mass. - Worcester, Massachusetts-based abstract expressionist painter John Pagano, who was featured in Artscope's March/April 2013 issue, has his next solo exhibition, “Accentuated Gestures,” this September 4-27 at the Sprinkler Factory Gallery in Worcester. Earlier this summer, I visited with John on a muggy evening at his Worcester studio to view the new paintings. I decided that it would be fun to photograph him casually in process of "curating" his show. At the time of my visit, John did not have a title for his show, and was engaged in selecting which paintings to feature. Many works remained unframed. We talked about the challenges and rewards of organizing an exhibition exclusively without gallery support. I didn't take interview notes, at the time, because it was not suppose to be a "formal interview." Later, recalling everything we … [Read more...] about Artscope revisits: John Pagano
