by Sara Farizan ACTON, MA- Viktor Lois is a transformer. Not like one from a summer blockbuster where robots beat one another to a pulp, but Lois is one with the machines of his own creation. In his 30 or more years of creating art, Lois is exhibiting his steel creations with the help of the Contemporary Arts International, a non-profit focused on bringing art and fostering art education in New England, located in the Acton area. Lois, a Hungarian artist with an eye for bringing humanity to industrial specimens, has made his brightly colored inventions out of recycled car frame, old machinery scraps and washing machine bits. His works in the "Body Builders" sculpture series are anywhere from 9 to 20 feet in height and can actually help you body build as they are functioning exercise machines. In these machines Lois hopes that those that choose to exercise will not only be … [Read more...] about Viktor Lois’ Kinetic Bodybuilders

At Home, At Galatea
by Mina Kang The Summer Members' Exhibition at Galatea Fine Art, with its many shades and styles, evokes both nostalgia and comfort. With artwork submitted by its each of its members, Galatea composed a diverse, but cohesive exhibit that conveys an array of emotions. Paula Estey's "Across Time," a mixed media on birch plywood composition, strikes you with its sad poetic lines that sing the pain of loss: “But a shadow lingers / Where a storm once was / And I swear I felt your hand across / The atoms of time / I swear.” The accompanying black and white photos remind you of the family albums that have been sleeping beneath your bed, and perhaps inspire you to revisit them. "Hopperesque Truro," a photograph of houses lined against a sunset, harbors a similar nostalgia. The houses, in dark monochrome, seem lonely. If you're worried about delving too deep into the past, Mengting Yu's … [Read more...] about At Home, At Galatea
Hole in the Wall Studioworks
by Sara Farizan RAYMOND, MAINE-There is never a good excuse not to visit Maine in the summertime if you are a resident of New England. Maine was essentially made for summer with beautiful lakes, blueberries, lobster rolls and the random Moose sightings while on a leisurely canoe ride. And there is then no excuse not to visit the Hole in the Wall Gallery if you are near the town of Raymond. The gallery is near Sebago Lake and has been frequented by many a tourist and seasonal homeowner. The gallery has also become a haven for local artists working in different mediums ranging from mixed media to oils to sculpture. The gallery isn't so much a hole in the wall, but more of a whimsical cabin that Hansel and Gretel may have come across without the impending danger of a cannibalistic witch. This summer, Hole in the Wall is featuring two artists who both work in oils, Wendy Newcomb and … [Read more...] about Hole in the Wall Studioworks
Photographers and Sculptors of Our Times at Gallery Z
by Sara Farizan PROVIDENCE-As of 2001, Gallery Z has been known to display eclectic and thought provoking art while also reaching out to the Providence, Rhode Island community of art enthusiasts, tourists and even locals who would like to enjoy a bit of wine while gazing at unusual and exceptional art. The gallery's 104th show proves to be a crowd pleaser with 18 artists showcasing their work, twelve photographers and six sculptors. The pieces are so different and the artists perspectives so unique, there is almost assuredly a piece for every visitor to enjoy. A color photograph of an ocean coastline may catch your eye, only to be distracted by a black and white photograph of young boys praying in a mosque. Small moments are captured like village women staring meekly out of a doorway or larger moments like a young couple on their wedding day holding their baby in a crowded … [Read more...] about Photographers and Sculptors of Our Times at Gallery Z

Here Comes the Sun: An Exhibition for a Special Student
by Sara Farizan BROOKLYN-Teachers are often the ones who make a lasting impression on students lives, but when a special student is able to transform a teacher's life, the world becomes a better place for it. New York based artist Erica Harney had the privilege of teaching a promising young art student by the name of Killian Mansfield at the New York State Summer School of the Arts/Visual Arts in 2007. Killian was an optimistic soul, often humming the Beatles "Here Comes the Sun" and gracing listeners with his talents on the ukulele. There was something else that differentiated Killian from his peers, he was battling a five year illness called synovial sarcoma, a rare breed of cancer that occurs in tendons and limb joints. Though Killian died in 2009, his spirit and unfaltering optimism stayed with Erica Harney who is now having a solo exhibition to benefit the Killian Mansfield … [Read more...] about Here Comes the Sun: An Exhibition for a Special Student
