The 2021 Boston International Film Festival, created by Filmmakers Collaborative, took place from November 19-21 at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts. During that time, filmmakers with different levels of experience came together to present their submitted work for the festival’s different categories: student film, student documentary, short film, foreign language film and narrative feature film. I met with three different filmmakers who had presented their work in three of the festival’s different categories. One of the student filmmakers I met was 10-year old Andrew Chan-Possemato, who created a film with his father, Albert, called “The Butler and the Ball,” which he also directed. This was Andrew’s first experience with the process of filmmaking. The two started writing the screenplay when Andrew was just 7-years old and they also starred in the film as the main … [Read more...] about STUDENT FILMMAKERS AND PROFESSIONALS SHOWCASED AT 2021 BOSTON INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

THEATERS OPEN THEIR VAULTS IN THE TIME OF COVID-19
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, live performance has been put on ice. But even though theaters have closed their doors, many are rummaging through their video archives and making productions from the past available for online viewing. Artscope has picked some of the best companies in this country and around the world that have opened their vaults for the locked-in public. THE NATIONAL THEATER: One of the United Kingdom’s most lauded theaters has begun a program they call “National Theater At Home.” An extension of their popular “National Theater Live,” which had broadcast plays live from London’s South Bank to cinemas across the globe, “At Home” will be offering a production a week. Currently showing at time of posting is the company’s frightening and technologically innovative adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Frankenstein, starring Benedict … [Read more...] about THEATERS OPEN THEIR VAULTS IN THE TIME OF COVID-19
REVIEW: FRONT INTERNATIONAL: CLEVELAND TRIENNIAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
The FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art, which opened on July 14, presented a new take on art exhibitions in this nation. In Cleveland, a city with multiple art venues, Akron and Oberlin with art, history and spaces of their own, 110 artists at 28 locations, including a Frank Lloyd Wright house, two churches and one decommissioned steamship, presented film, video, installation, painting, sculpture, performance and community art. Open until September 30, each venue contributed to a critical mass of art in three Northeast Ohio cities. The brainchild of Frederick Bidwell, an art collector on the board of The Cleveland and Akron Art Museums, FRONT refers, he said, to the Erie lakefront that Cleveland embraces, and to its standing at the forefront of art in the region. Artistic director Michelle Grabner, a celebrated painter and professor at the Art Institute of … [Read more...] about REVIEW: FRONT INTERNATIONAL: CLEVELAND TRIENNIAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
Carissa Rodriguez’s The Maid at MIT List Visual Arts Center
Carissa Rodriguez’s newest film, “The Maid,” is currently on view at the MIT List Visual Arts Center. The film portrays a day in the life of Sherrie Levine’s “Newborn” sculptures. It follows these crystal sculptures to private and institutional residencies from New York to Los Angeles. In addition to the titular film, the exhibit showcases some of Rodriguez’s photography and other films. In this exhibition, Rodriguez explores the relationships that artists have with their artworks and how they relate to conditional relationships with third party agents such as institutions, caregivers, and surrogates. In a way “The Maid” is more than just a film portraying Levine’s sculptures. It is a tribute to her and appropriation art. Levine is known by many as one of the most famous appropriation artists. Early on in her career, she would photograph famous photographs and claim them as her own. … [Read more...] about Carissa Rodriguez’s The Maid at MIT List Visual Arts Center
