Capsule Preview: Sharon Arts Center’s 66th Members Exhibition
By Brian Goslow PETERSBOROUGH, NH - The Sharon Arts Center’s 66th Members Exhibition begins with an opening reception this Friday night, January 11, from 5-7 p.m. and continues through February 23 in its main gallery at 30 Grove Street and Depot Square in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. & Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The show is a continuing tradition for the Monadnock region that includes paintings, photographs, prints, sculpture, ceramics and textiles by Sharon Arts members, students and faculty. Capsule Preview: John Wilson’s Eternal Presence at Danforth Museum of Art
By Brian Goslow FRAMINGHAM, MA - Eighty-four drawings, prints, paintings and sculpture compose the major retrospective “John Wilson: Eternal Presence,” currently on view at the Danforth Museum of Art, 123 Union Avenue in Framingham, Mass. Born in Roxbury, Mass. in 1922, Wilson’s career reads like a life well-lived and serves as a living document of how art and society have changed during that time. In the early 1940s, he studied under the tutelage of Karl Zerbe at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, went on to work in Fernand Léger’s studio and collaborate with Taller de Grafica Popular, and spent two decades creating a series of lovingly devoted portraitures of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now 90, he continues to create passionate work. Capsule Preview: Body Coverings at Simmons College’s Trustman Art Gallery
By Brian Goslow BOSTON, MA - Clothing-themed creations by Ruby Chishti, Sally Eyring and Mariann S. Verheyen make up the “Body Coverings” exhibition that opens on February 4 at Simmons College’s Trustman Art Gallery. A combination of “social commentary, sculptural invention and theatrical fantasy,” the show explores “the human desire to adorn, escape ourselves or intimidate others” through objects and designs not meant for wearing. Eyring utilizes copper wire, paper and computer memory chips in making head coverings and garments; theatrical costume designer Verheyen is represented through 2D designs made for the Boston University Theatre Costume Department; and Pakistani-born Chishti makes surrealistic “wearables” that address cultural expectations, gender and memory. Capsule Preview: Antarctica at Milton Academy’s Nesto Gallery
