Capsule Preview: John Wilson’s Eternal Presence at Danforth Museum of Art
By Brian Goslow FRAMINGHAM, MA - Eighty-four drawings, prints, paintings and sculpture compose the major retrospective “John Wilson: Eternal Presence,” currently on view at the Danforth Museum of Art, 123 Union Avenue in Framingham, Mass. Born in Roxbury, Mass. in 1922, Wilson’s career reads like a life well-lived and serves as a living document of how art and society have changed during that time. In the early 1940s, he studied under the tutelage of Karl Zerbe at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, went on to work in Fernand Léger’s studio and collaborate with Taller de Grafica Popular, and spent two decades creating a series of lovingly devoted portraitures of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now 90, he continues to create passionate work. The exhibition remains on view through March 24. … [Read more...] about Capsule Preview: John Wilson’s Eternal Presence at Danforth Museum of Art
Capsule Preview: Body Coverings at Simmons College’s Trustman Art Gallery
By Brian Goslow BOSTON, MA - Clothing-themed creations by Ruby Chishti, Sally Eyring and Mariann S. Verheyen make up the “Body Coverings” exhibition that opens on February 4 at Simmons College’s Trustman Art Gallery. A combination of “social commentary, sculptural invention and theatrical fantasy,” the show explores “the human desire to adorn, escape ourselves or intimidate others” through objects and designs not meant for wearing. Eyring utilizes copper wire, paper and computer memory chips in making head coverings and garments; theatrical costume designer Verheyen is represented through 2D designs made for the Boston University Theatre Costume Department; and Pakistani-born Chishti makes surrealistic “wearables” that address cultural expectations, gender and memory. The show continues through March 7 at 300 the Fenway in Boston. … [Read more...] about Capsule Preview: Body Coverings at Simmons College’s Trustman Art Gallery

Gallery profile: Isaac Tin Wei Lin’s work fills the space at Blanc
By Christina Huang CAMBRIDGE, MA - One phone call, an address (110 Brookline Street) and an open invitation: Saturday night at 6 p.m. — led me to the opening reception of "Extended Absence" at the Blanc Gallery. As I walked into the gallery, I was immediately engulfed by the colorful patterns of Isaac Tin Wei Lin's work, from the large-scale paintings that hung from the walls, to the intimate pieces that fill the space-between by the staircase to site specific floor installation. It may be hard to believe, on first view, but what appears to be wheat pasted graffiti is actually created by skillful painting. On the second floor is a small exhibition featuring works by artists of Space 1026, a creative community based in Philadelphia, which Lin has also been involved in. Open since October 2012, Blanc catches Central Square by a storm as the gallery blends contemporary art, music and … [Read more...] about Gallery profile: Isaac Tin Wei Lin’s work fills the space at Blanc
