Percy Fortini-Wright: Entangled Lines at the Copley Society of Art by Shem Tane Using acrylic or spray paint, the art style of Percy Fortini-Wright’s, whose “Entangled Rhymes” exhibition opened last Thursday, Oct. 8, at Boston’s Copley Society of Art, focuses on the background of the urban environment. His latest works are heavily rooted in black and white contrast and how each color interacts with each other; graffiti has been one of his main influences in his catalog of work. In creating one piece, “My Left Hand Stuck in the Matrix, I'm the Apex I steal Science off Spaceships,” he said that he strived to combine, “the feeling of order and chaos.” The perspective of the piece is slightly distorted, with the diagonal border between the cityscape and the checker floor. The perspective itself also creates the image to be compressed, yet expansive with the collection of … [Read more...] about Untangled

Cornered: Circling Around Nebraska City with Lisa Barthelson
By J. Fatima Martins Lisa Barthelson, who lives in Rutland, Massachusetts, and maintains a studio in Worcester, is a master mixed-media sculptor and printmaker, encaustic artist, experimental photographer and occasional curator and arts administrator. She is an Artscope Magazine favorite who has been mentioned and discussed in several past essays and was the feature, along with Carrie Crane, in a review of their collaborative exhibition “Here, Now” (2011). Barthelson is now at a transitional point: having left the “emerging artist” stage long ago, she’s getting comfortable being within the “established artist” domain. Right now, she’s participating in five New England exhibitions — listed here at the end of the interview section. In one of her most recent emails to me, Barthelson wrote a casually wise send off that captured poignantly the purpose of art making. Her words … [Read more...] about Cornered: Circling Around Nebraska City with Lisa Barthelson
Wanderlust: Spain
By James Foritano (When he’s not covering the visual and theatrical arts for artscope, Mr. Foritano has been know to travel the world in search of new experiences — sometimes as an observer, other times as a participant. In this instance, he’s a bit of both during his recent trip overseas, which he shares with you here.) Ah, Spain! An inebriation of art and a delightful puzzle of custom and culture. I was just drumming my fingers whilst waiting crankily for another assignment from Artscope when I summarily decided to go abroad on a busman’s holiday after Elder Hostel, which has recently changed its name to the more racy Road Scholar, slipped an invitation through the mail slot for a jaunt to nearly all the more artistically blessed sights in Spain. It seemed to be a summons, so we soon found ourselves in Madrid where any soul the least sensitive to beauty finds itself … [Read more...] about Wanderlust: Spain

By Sarah Rushford Torrington, Conn. - Five Points Gallery in Torrington, Connecticut is a non-profit contemporary art gallery showing professional regional, national and international visual artists. The gallery presents exhibitions in three renovated exhibition spaces in a historic downtown building and the lively events and receptions draw large crowds from a community of artists, educators, collectors and an engaged public from across the region. Multimedia artist Gene Gort’s installation, "Venetian,” on view through October 17, 2015, combines six channels of video with an array of 30 archival inkjet prints shot by the artist during a visit to Venice during the 2013 Venice Biennale. The prints are slightly out-of-focus photographs of exterior walls of Venetian buildings; a moody palette of pastel gradients simply framed and not behind glass. Large flat-panel video screens … [Read more...] about CORNERED: Multimedia Artist Gene Gort on his current show, Venetian
In Review: South End Open Studios 2015
By Emily Pysczynski (Artscope is proud of its intern program which has an end goal of helping area college students polish their writing, reporting and research skills to help develop the next generation of art reviwers and critics. We’re happy to feature the newest member of our staff her on the artscope zine) South End Boston, Mass. - It was wonderful to get to meet so many incredibly talented artists at the SOWA Open Studios event this year. There was so much to see and so many interesting people to meet that it was hard to ever leave. Two artists based at 450 Harrison Ave. left quite an impression on me when I stepped into their studios, and I came away from this event loving art more than I ever knew I did. When I think of distortions, I typically call to mind abstract works that stretch beyond reality or possibly transform the ordinary into something comical. However, B. … [Read more...] about In Review: South End Open Studios 2015
