By John Paul Stapleton Boston, MA - Gateway Arts has been helping disabled artists break into the mainstream since 1973 and is still going strong with their new “Up the Ladder to the Open Door Gallery” exhibit. Gateway artistic director Stephen DeFronzo and Lorri Berenberg curated this exhibit using work from artists who participated in Gateway’s “Up the Ladder'’ program. Over the past two years, these artists have worked with facilitators to create portfolios and a presence in their local arts community. The exhibit is being shown in the Open Door Gallery, hence the name, which is a space Gateway has worked with before in their mission to give disabled artists a voice; it’s located a few blocks from South Station on South Street. “We’re dedicated to provide arts based services to adults with disabilities” DeFronzo said. Gateway not only gives these adults a studio to work on … [Read more...] about Gateway Arts presents Up the Ladder to the Open Door at the Open Door Gallery

Hokusai at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
By James Foritano Boston, MA - There’s just no telling where telling detail will show up, except, of course, as you take in the “Hokusai” exhibit currently at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. There, it’s everywhere — and you are the omniscient, highly selective eye. A word of warning, though, before you start your journey through old Japan. In our fast-paced times, we are more used to crisply defined objectives, looking at our crowded world with a summary eye, and then ‘tweeting’ our response to those who have to know. Hokusai had a different mission, a different pace, a different audience in mind. He exercised his omnivous eye, tireless hand to record, to tell, albeit with economy and wit, nearly everything to everybody. Whoever you are, you are there. Have an eye for the beauty of flowers, birds, insects? Prepare to be mesmerized as the horsefly homes in on the … [Read more...] about Hokusai at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Sarah Meyers Brent: Primal Garden at the Walter Feldman Gallery, Boston
By Sarah Kinkade Boston, MA - Life is a complicated mess: there are ups and downs, joys and disappointments, smooth sailings and rough landings. It can be both ugly and beautiful, yet, the view of beauty generally prevails as almost everyone can agree that ‘life is beautiful.’ This sentiment is captured in the artwork of Sarah Meyers Brent. Brent’s inspiration mainly comes from her own life as she works through various situations and events, finding beauty in untraditional ways. Within her drawings and sculptural paintings, she embraces the ugliness of things while highlighting the hidden prettiness underneath it all. And yes, many of her paintings go beyond the standard definition of the word and enter the category of sculpture as they ooze and explode off the canvas. Many of her materials are organic — for example, flowers and dirt — mixed with acrylic to help give it shape. … [Read more...] about Sarah Meyers Brent: Primal Garden at the Walter Feldman Gallery, Boston
Philip Gerstein: ¡Experiment! at Galatea Fine Art
By Sarah Kinkade Boston, MA - As the sound of African music flows throughout his studio, Philip Gerstein’s art pieces begin to sing their own songs in a burst of color and textures as their stories unfold. Each stands out in its own distinct way with different mediums and color palates, creating a theme of experimentation and discovery. Gerstein uses mediums of oil stick, glitter, powder pigment and textured gel to give his artwork a 3D perception that insists on a prolonged and closer look. Many exhibitions focus on a central theme or a particular artistic style; this is not the case with Gerstein. His exhibit “¡Experiment!” at Galatea Fine Art through April 26 showcases his diverse painting styles that range from his tranquil patterns of red in “The Power of Intention” to edgier pieces like “Listen and Ye Shall Hear;” each style is vastly different, yet appears to go hand-in-hand … [Read more...] about Philip Gerstein: ¡Experiment! at Galatea Fine Art

Gallery spotlight: Voltage Coffee & Art
By Puloma Ghosh Cambridge, MA – Of all the hipster cafés and trendy study spots across Cambridge, Voltage Coffee & Art stands out as a spot that can be relied on for a good brew and a good exhibit. Stepping out of the “coffee shop art” stigma, Voltage curates quality artwork by local artists with rotating six-week exhibits to showcase the emerging talent around Boston. The artwork is as fresh as their coffee, incorporated seamlessly into the comfortable hangout spaces around the café. Founder Lucy R. Valena always noticed the connection between coffee shops and creative energy. A graduate of Hampshire College and a writer, she understood the inspiration a good cup of coffee or espresso could provide. She returned to Massachusetts and began Voltage, her own coffee and art project, in 2010, and curator Anna Schindelar soon came aboard as well. “We always intended on having … [Read more...] about Gallery spotlight: Voltage Coffee & Art
