With characters that seem to echo every facet of Shakespeare’s era — boisterous, sensual, quicksilver passionate, vengeful, generous, jealous, the Lyric Stage Company’s presentation of Lauren Gunderson’s “The Book of Will” is hilariously enjoyable. It’s impossible not to join in, tentatively, at first, even wonderingly — asking yourself, “who are these people” — then you grasp that they are not only “The Kings Men,” a company of outstandingly dedicated actors but their own men, never really off stage, and never more onstage than when they are playing, often along with Shakespeare himself, the bard’s own realistic fantasies. A handful plus of “The Kings Men” and their women are most often gathered around a wooden trestle table. With the Globe Theatre in the background, they lean in with their elbows on the table top — except when lifting them to quaff from a full tankard — which is … [Read more...] about THE BOOK OF WILL HAS LYRIC STAGE COMPANY AUDIENCES LAUGHING

BOSTON BALLET PRESENTS CHOREOGRAPHER
So, wife Madeleine and I, both rabid dance enthusiasts and also eager to participate in the opening up of the arts to all manner of under-represented genders, in this case, women, took two aisle seats up front, at a live presentation of five world premieres by five women choreographers — brought together as “ChoreograpHERS” — at the Citizens Bank Opera House, a smart walk from the Park Street Red Line Station. Two little girls three rows and to the right in front of us had doffed their pink hoodies, and, vibrating with giddiness, seemed to be congratulating each other on being present at such an opportune age in such an opportune era. When the curtain opened on “Point of Departure” to reveal a trio of musicians, live, nested to the rear of a tutti frutti of colorfully costumed dancers on the point of breaking into choreographed motion, it appeared from the applause that the … [Read more...] about BOSTON BALLET PRESENTS CHOREOGRAPHER
BRIDGES: ONLINE EXHIBITION AT CHILDS GALLERY
“Bridges” is an online exhibition from Childs Gallery that features artwork from various artists depicting a stunning array of bridge landscapes and designs. “Though they serve a simple purpose of connecting places and people,” these artfully constructed bridges serve as marvels to the artists and are the perfect muses for those keen on how architecture can personify one’s art. If you’ve ever been awed by the sight of a bridge, grand or small, this exhibition is a wonderful escape that offers the viewer the chance to marvel just as the artists once did. Ben Norris’ piece, “Firenze, Ponte Vecchio,” 1933, is an elaborately sketched piece of pencil on paper which effortlessly captures the essence of Florence, Italy’s segmental arch bridge, Ponte Vecchio. This bridge is known for housing shops in-between its arches, and Norris protrudes these shops in his piece with sloping lines more … [Read more...] about BRIDGES: ONLINE EXHIBITION AT CHILDS GALLERY
DAVID LEE BLACK BLENDS PHOTOGRAPHY, MUSIC ON DECEMBER 9 AT THE FUNKY BLACK-TIE & BLING GALA ART OPENING AT THE GRADUATE PROVIDENCE
Photographer David Lee Black has been featured in several Artscope Magazine profiles and also can be found performing behind and holding moveable drum sets in the Providence area. This Thursday, December 9, he’ll unveil his latest collections of work at “The Funky Black-tie and Bling Gala Art Opening” from 7-9 p.m. in the Capital Ballroom of the Graduate Providence Hotel, 11 Dorrance St., Providence, Rhode Island. In the middle of last minute preparations for the event, managing editor Brian Goslow exchanged questions about how he ended up based at the Graduate Providence, what it’s like to have a rotating window gallery space, having to leave the late David A. Lang’s studio in Natick, Massachusetts and his plans for 2022. YOU’VE SPENT THE LAST PART OF 2021 RESETTLING INTO A NEW STUDIO SPACE AT THE GRADUATE PROVIDENCE HOTEL. HOW DID THAT COME ALONG AND WHAT UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES … [Read more...] about DAVID LEE BLACK BLENDS PHOTOGRAPHY, MUSIC ON DECEMBER 9 AT THE FUNKY BLACK-TIE & BLING GALA ART OPENING AT THE GRADUATE PROVIDENCE
MIAMI ART WEEK: THE LAST PARTY BEFORE THE WORLD CLOSES UP AGAIN?
The crowds were thin, but the wallets were open at Art Basel Miami Beach 2021 and the surrounding fairs at Miami Art Week. VIPs bought fast and furious during the first two VIP days and left after attending the night parties and exhibitions, the best of which was again at the Faena Hotel where an NFT auction and an inflatable iceberg in the hotel pool were the stars. As Artscope’s publisher, Kaveh Mojtabai, and I roamed the halls of Art Basel Miami Beach and the other art fairs in Miami, an insular world of joy and peace surrounded us despite the heavy vehicular traffic getting there, and the necessary health and safety check stations. Again, Scope, in a tent on the South Beach, had work created during the pandemic, with an overall theme of glitz and color. Allover, the feeling reflected in the work was one of the last party before the world closed up again. Take the glitz and the … [Read more...] about MIAMI ART WEEK: THE LAST PARTY BEFORE THE WORLD CLOSES UP AGAIN?
DAY ONE: ‘BRIGHTLY COLORED” ART BASEL RETURNS TO MIAMI BEACH
I hope I am not looking at the storm before the apocalypse, but everything at the Miami Art Fairs, and especially in the halls and sectors of Art Basel Miami Beach seem sunny and normal, if a bit less crowded than usual. Keeping socially distanced is not a problem, and mask wearing is not déclassé in the least, but rather required. Dress is definitely fancier than usual, as though we might not party again for quite a while, and this respite between pandemic strains closing venues is a last gasp, hopefully not literally. The show is brightly colored, with few subjectively dark work, providing a party atmosphere, added to the crowd’s bright colors and floral patterned dresses (and men’s suits). Subjectively, there are lots of flowers and landscapes of beautifully, if environmentally challenged scenes. I loved Miguel Cardenas’ work, drawn onto a blue painted wall, of flora and fauna … [Read more...] about DAY ONE: ‘BRIGHTLY COLORED” ART BASEL RETURNS TO MIAMI BEACH
