Rising seas and high-rise buildings continue to coexist in Miami, a city threatened by climate change, vulnerable to constant floods and doomed to be swallowed by the ocean. While the water doesn’t claim part of southern Miami Beach, the art fairs continue to take over part of the landscape annually, trying to coexist and amicably blend in with nature. Artists have been, for decades, the leading voices echoing the need for social, political and economic changes while raising awareness about pressing environmental issues through their practices. Art fairs would only be expected to comply with contemporary art market interests by making meaningful changes and adapting to healthy habits. Consistency speaks louder than words. Founded in 2020, the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), a nonprofit membership organization, has been introducing proactive ways to yield results where members … [Read more...] about A SUPPORTIVE PLATFORM

A MAGNIFICENT GLOBAL ART EXPERIENCE
“Live life with no excuses. Travel with no regret.” — Oscar Wilde The art of travel is traveling with art! Are we there yet? While traveling, experiencing the world through the eyes of artists has always provided me with a safe method to understand the context and experience events that instantly connect me closer to the local culture. Inspired by the hiatus provided by the virus spread, with gratitude to science, the traveling industry is bouncing back. This past summer was the perfect setting to bid the international art world hello, again! As I satisfied my cravings for exploration of the global art world in person, my adventures included Ireland, Scotland and London. I ventured through some less-traveled and some heavily traveled roads, and the arts were always my guiding star. In Ireland, among my local discoveries were the hand weavers from the River Avoca. The little town of … [Read more...] about A MAGNIFICENT GLOBAL ART EXPERIENCE
WEEKEND SAMPLER
How about a wonderful, wandering art-filled day trip (or two) through Seacoast New Hampshire and north to Portland? Sometimes it’s just plain exhilarating to jump in the convertible, head north to Maine (or whichever direction you begin from), and simply have fun. Let’s take a leisurely trip and check out some art venues. This trip covers everything from a start-up museum in an up-and-coming artsy town, to a chi-chi boutique-y gallery in Kittery, Maine, a historic former library for one spot and a long-standing prep school art gallery for another, and ends at a well-respected, established museum in Portland. Let’s get going — depending on how much viewing time you need this can be a whirlwind day or an entire weekend! (To read more, pick up a copy of our latest issue! DISPATCH FROM ALASKA: ANCHORAGE MUSEUM GETS INDIGENOUS MESSAGES HEARD
I stand on the traditional homeland of the Eklutna Dena’ina, now known as Anchorage, on a temperate day in mid-June, about to enter the largest museum in the largest state in the United States. The Anchorage Museum is huge. As a point of comparison, at 247,000 square feet, it is almost 30,000 square feet larger than the Whitney Museum of American Art. This museum of art, history, ethnography, ecology and science is in this city of 5,000 only a few generations ago and now nearly 300,000 — 40% of the state’s population. Situated on the Cook Inlet in in the south central part of the state, the city is a cultural hub, and the museum is a center of art and culture, and one of the most visited destinations in the state, and for good reason. With significant collections, a dynamic exhibitions and programming schedule, a vision of the significance of the north now and in the future, and … [Read more...] about DISPATCH FROM ALASKA: ANCHORAGE MUSEUM GETS INDIGENOUS MESSAGES HEARD
DRAWN TO WATER: NEW BEDFORD, SOUTH COAST ARTISTS WELCOME VISITORS
The South Coast has a number of self-guided studio tour options to punctuate summer weekends. The artist organized “South Coast Artists’ 19th Annual Open Studio Tour” happens on July 16 and 17 and again on August 20 and 21 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and includes over 30 artists in Westport, Dartmouth, Little Compton and Tiverton. The number of artists involved makes this arguably the largest open studio tour in the region and encompasses South Coast towns in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “The Art Drive” on August 5through 7 and running from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. is limited to Dartmouth and Westport and is a curated event. The idea of these open studio tours is for audiences to have the pleasure of a summer road trip, intermittently stopping to see art. Presented at each location will often be the equivalent of a one-person show. I particularly like that a self-guided tour can be a great … [Read more...] about DRAWN TO WATER: NEW BEDFORD, SOUTH COAST ARTISTS WELCOME VISITORS
RETURN TO VACATIONLAND: COASTAL MAINE ARTISTS HOPE FOR A BANNER SUMMER
The summer art calendar in coastal Maine is jam- packed by design. During the cold depths of a northern New England winter, all of us involved in the Maine art scene have plenty of time to think and plan. We know exactly when the away-crowds will return. We know precisely how short that window of opportunity is. And we take each and every effort to optimize our gallery and museum programming in the ways most likely to bring our diverse communities of artists, enthusiasts and collectors together for festive gatherings under summer skies, once again. In contrast to last year’s busy season, when the lingering COVID-19 pandemic dominated many arts organizations into a series of half-steps and false starts; the summer of 2022 is shaping up to be a banner year for Maine-based artists and cultural institutions. That’s precisely why we wanted to offer this coastal Maine summer arts … [Read more...] about RETURN TO VACATIONLAND: COASTAL MAINE ARTISTS HOPE FOR A BANNER SUMMER
