The Cahoon Museum of American Art presents “Stave & Cane: Nantucket Basket,” an exhibition celebrating the rich history and refined artistry of this iconic American craft. Originating on Nantucket in the 19th century, Nantucket baskets evolved from utilitarian lightship baskets, used by sailors to hold provisions, into highly prized decorative objects. Over time, skilled artisans elevated the form through meticulous craftsmanship, incorporating fine hardwood staves, hand-shaped rims, and intricately woven cane.
Today, Nantucket baskets are recognized for their sculptural beauty and technical precision, often featuring carved elements, scrimshaw, and custom fittings. This exhibition highlights both traditional techniques and contemporary interpretations, showcasing the enduring legacy of this uniquely American art form.
