From its beginning in 1995, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking’s mission has been to support, preserve and advance the art of original prints. Located in a converted stone carriage house in Norwalk, Connecticut, CCP is equipped to accommodate intaglio, lithography, monotype, silkscreen, woodblock printing, papermaking, book arts and digital processes. This year, with the CCP’s Members Show, on display through February 9, viewers are also being introduced to the interior thoughts, dreams and passions that are fueling the work of this multi-aged and multi-talented community. With the theme “Under the Influence” to guide them, members responded with wide-ranging essays that have accompanied their art as wall text. Kimberly Henrikson, CCP’s executive director, said that she has been delighted by the responses not only of the participating members, but of the visitors who … [Read more...] about PRINTMAKING UNDER THE INFLUENCE: DREAMS AND PASSIONS FUEL MULTI-TALENTED COMMUNITY

WOOD ENGRAVED ADVENTURES: BARRY MOSER’S ILLUSTRATIONS AT BROMER BOOKS
Bromer Booksellers and Gallery is a hidden wonder tucked away on the second floor of an otherwise-unremarkable Boylston Street building. It is a bookstore and gallery specializing in rare, antique and miniature books and prints. The gallery part opened up just last year, and the blend of books and art creates an exciting milieu of creativity. Bromer “strives to complement the art of the book with the book as art.” And their upcoming show, “Barry Moser: The Storied Artist,” certainly encapsulates that theme. Barry Moser is a master illustrator known for his wood engravings. He studied under Leonard Baskin shortly after moving to Massachusetts, and then went on to begin graduate studies in printmaking at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied bookmaking, design and illustration with Jack Coughlin and Fred Becker — and almost gave up in his attempt to master wood … [Read more...] about WOOD ENGRAVED ADVENTURES: BARRY MOSER’S ILLUSTRATIONS AT BROMER BOOKS
ESTELLE DISCH: MEMORY AND JUSTICE AT THE S & G PROJECT GALLERY NEW BEDFORD
“Memory and Justice: Impressions of Disappearance in Argentina,” an exhibition of photography by Estelle Disch at the S & G Project Gallery in the Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford’s north end, captures her experience and witnessed perspective of the aftermath of Argentina’s historic tragedy of Los Desaparecidos (The Disappeared), those who vanished after the March 24, 1976 coup when the military junta seized power in Argentina. The Junta launched a campaign to wipe out left-wing terrorism resulting in thousands of dissidents and, innocent civilians unconnected with terrorism, who were arrested. Many of them vanished or, disappeared, without a trace. They became known as los desaparecidos and fell victim to a methodic use of torture and murder. Disch’s exhibit, which runs from April 20 to May 15, explores the space of one of the sites of the tragedy of the disappeared that … [Read more...] about ESTELLE DISCH: MEMORY AND JUSTICE AT THE S & G PROJECT GALLERY NEW BEDFORD
Works on Paper at the South Shore Art Center
The Bancroft Gallery at South Shore Art Center’s current show is “Works on Paper,” juried by Andrew Witkin of Krakow Witkin Gallery. “Works on Paper” has a diverse set of pieces, the only common denominator of them being that they are paper. From hyper realistic watercolor to abstract cut-paper works, the show was dominated by a mix of media. Out of hundreds of artists’ submissions, only 50 works were picked by Witkin for the show, and seven of them given awards. “I was amazed at the breadth of exploration and the depth of involvement,” Witkin’s juror statement expressed. “My decisions are balanced between personal preferences and respect for the specifics of the wonderful diversity of art presented. The works show incredible creativity, dedication and skill.” Witkin asked that the award winners be honored equally; “In this era of intense judgement and separation, I hope this group … [Read more...] about Works on Paper at the South Shore Art Center
Unexpected Surprises: Contemporary Printmaking Branches Out
The process of printmaking is a metaphor for the making of a human being: from many layers, one is achieved. “It’s a dialogue,” explained Paul DeRuvo, Associate Staff Printer, while speaking about three print-portraits arranged together in “E Pluribus Unum: From Many, One,” at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CCP), another solid and expertly curated exhibition of superb and diverse examples of contemporary print methods curated by Kimberly Henrikson, Executive Director of CCP. DeRuvo was talking specifically about artists Meg Turner, Elizabeth Peyton and Nicole Eisenman who are part of the seventeen artists in the exhibition which also features well-recognized artist-activists Swoon, Dana Schutz and Alison Saar. Addressing the theme of being human, the exhibition’s subject is the human body either in full form or as a portrait. From the exhibition statement: “We live in a time … [Read more...] about Unexpected Surprises: Contemporary Printmaking Branches Out

Selected from 103 entries, the Cambridge Art Association’s “2018 Emerging Artists Exhibition,” which has its opening reception on Thursday, July 12 from 6-9 p.m. at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery, 25 Lowell St., Cambridge, Massachusetts, scored loudly on the annual exhibition’s intent of serving as a showcase for “a selection of work the reflections current trends in the visual art world, our present moment in time, and the vision of our curator.” The show was curated by Kate Mothes, founder of Young Space (yngspc.com), an independent online and nomadic curatorial platform emphasizing contemporary art by emerging, early-career and student artists. Commenting on the collection as a whole, Mothes said, “a fairly large portion of submissions addressed themes of identity, relationships, home and current events, which struck me as an honest response to uncertain times, and made the entire … [Read more...] about CAPSULE PREVIEWS: CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION, CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOP, GARY MAROTTA FINE ART & MAINE MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS
