Floor van de Velde got inspiration for her light boxes — featured in her latest exhibition, “Variations on ColorFields,” which opens on November 8 at McIninch Art Gallery on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University, from a Rothko exhibition at the Harvard Art Museum. “The university decided to hang some of Rothko’s panels in a dining room,” she said. “The panels lost the majority of their pigment over the years and they were considered damaged beyond repair. But then the Harvard Museum decided to try to revive the color by using projected light. Most critics and curators were busy discussing whether this method was as reliable or effective as traditional art renovation techniques, but meanwhile it made for a fascinating show that played with notions of color and light. The Versatility of Impressions Provoked by Blue By Ali Russo It’s no secret that the color blue is a favorite amongst many people. Some can’t say why they like the color the most, while others explain their bias is based upon a personal memory, or inclination. Either way, blue is a particular color that tends to have the notion to provoke certain thoughts, feelings and emotions in people and Artists’ Corner & Gallery in Acton, Mass., based their second thematic show just on that. The space had the same atmosphere as a long, lived-in home, with love seats to lounge on if and when necessary. Jurored by artscope’s publisher and founder, Kaveh Mojtabai, the paintings are arranged neatly along the walls, each work having its own, respective area. EXPLORING HUE AT VAN VESSEM by Don Wilkinson Tiverton, Rhode Island - Along with red and yellow, blue is part of a holy trinity of primary colors from which all other hues are born. Its manifestations include navy, azure, baby blue, indigo, periwinkle, the absurdly named “true blue” and many others. It is ripe with symbolism: tranquility, peace and relaxation; conversely, it can be the avatar of melancholy, sadness and depression. In some parts of the world, it is the color of conservatism, while in the United States, blue connotes liber- alism.
