Lennie Peterson’s “Synesthesia,” on view through October 15 at the Narrows Art Center in Fall River, Massachusetts, is a must-see exhibition of over 40 original mixed-media drawing-paintings (and a few reproductions of originals in Giclée on board), a hanging sculpture and a behind-the-scenes video of Peterson at work. In the video, we see Peterson creating with a live-performance format, which he is now famous for doing, and get a glimpse of some of his lesser known and fascinating practices. There is a revelation in the video: he takes a substrate and places it in water and sand in a beach environment, allowing the materials to arrive at a natural unrehearsed condition. This act is important because it is Peterson’s fundamental guiding force — flow. The exhibition itself features some of Peterson’s best-known and best-loved portraits of many iconic musical figures, including … [Read more...] about Synesthesia: Music-Inspired Art and Mindscapes by Lennie Peterson at the Narrows Art Center

NEW ENGLAND COLLECTIVE IX AT GALATEA FINE ART
For its ninth annual juried show, “New England Collective IX,” Galatea Fine Art, located in the heart of Boston’s SOWA District, enlisted the expertise of Marni Elyse Katz to jury the show. The show features over 50 artists including Bredt Handy, Elizabeth Pogor and Laura Fischman. Katz is a freelance design journalist, a consultant and an art curator that sources art for private collectors; she is the main blogger for stylecarrot.com and is a contributor to The Boston Globe, Design New England and Boston Home. In this exhibition, Katz does a stellar job of selecting pieces that are not only strong in their own right, but are complementary to the other works hanging on the walls of the gallery. In this exhibition, one can observe that Katz was drawn to works that are slight abstractions on everyday objects and scenes. Each piece deals with subject matter tied to daily life, but … [Read more...] about NEW ENGLAND COLLECTIVE IX AT GALATEA FINE ART
TEN KINGSTON ASSOCIATES: ENTANGLED AT KINGSTON GALLERY
“TEN Kingston Associates: Entangled,” the latest show at Kingston Gallery, is a group exhibition that explores the connections between objects and ideas and how the process of making art begins to intertwine and become entangled by the concepts of shape, light, realism and abstractism. It features different interpretations of this prompt through a variety of mediums. Viewers are encouraged to ponder how both they and the artist react to the same ideas and feelings contained or transmitted by a work of art. For this writer, two artists stole the show. Anthony Falcetta’s abstract acrylic paintings of various color patterns and shapes explore how colors interact and how they can both fade into each but also have ridged divisions. His “Strange Overtones” features a wide array of red and blue hues in which some tones are leaking into others, while some of the shapes have hard rigid … [Read more...] about TEN KINGSTON ASSOCIATES: ENTANGLED AT KINGSTON GALLERY
THE ART MARKET, JANUARY 2018
by Nancy Nesvet With high state and local real estate tax deductions limited, stocks deliriously high and bank interest rates way low, art is the way to go, and many buyers are jumping at the opportunities out there. Last month’s sales at Art Basel Miami 2017 bore out my prediction that older art on the secondary market would allow buyers to pick up great deals. A large supply of renowned artists’ work was available to purchase. The supply in the United States might get even larger now that like-kind exchanges of real property has been amended (Sec 13303 of the Tax Reform Act) to exclude property and only include real property. That excludes trading in artworks for other artwork, and encourages its owners to sell. On the world market, the gems are in short supply; the Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi, Basquiat’s Untitled, Munch’s, “Scream” and De Kooning’s “Interchange” all sold at … [Read more...] about THE ART MARKET, JANUARY 2018
SWEETS FOR THE SWEET: NOT JUST DESSERTS IN SHELBURNE
FEATURED MUSEUM SWEET TOOTH: THE ART OF DESSERT SHELBURNE MUSEUM 6000 SHELBURNE ROAD, SHELBURNE, VT SEPTEMBER 23 - FEBRUARY 18 by Elayne Clift Don’t go hungry to the Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education’s Murphy Gallery at Vermont’s Shelburne Museum between September 23 and February 18. That’s when a whimsical and somewhat decadent ode to America’s appetite for tasty confections will be on display, with pieces ranging from wildly decorated shoes to chocolate sculptures and tongue-in-cheek food installations involving everything from licorice to sugar cubes. Paintings, sculptures and ceramics add to the potpourri of art that head curator Kory Rogers said offers deeper meaning about our history and culture. While the work of both international and local artists using dessert-themed mixed media will offer a feast for the eyes and often a good chuckle, it also will … [Read more...] about SWEETS FOR THE SWEET: NOT JUST DESSERTS IN SHELBURNE
EXPLORING ABSTRACTION: POGOR AT COLO COLO
FEATURED ARTIST ELIZABETH POGOR COLO COLO GALLERY 101 WEST RODNEY FRENCH BOULEVARD NEW BEDFORD, MA THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30 by Brian Goslow Elizabeth Pogor has spent a good part of her summer creating many of the paintings that will be on display in her first exhibition of oil paintings at New Bedford’s Colo Colo Gallery through the end of September. She received the show through old-fashioned networking with a modern twist. Pogor sent a private message and an image to Luis Villanueva, owner and director of Colo Colo Gallery, through the gallery’s Facebook Page, request-ing that he visit her website to review her work. “I did and I liked what I saw,” he said, “and we made an appointment for her to see my gallery.” He found she complemented his existing artist roster. “The gallery has nine years of history in promoting women artists with talent,” Villanueva said. “She is a … [Read more...] about EXPLORING ABSTRACTION: POGOR AT COLO COLO
