Martha's Vineyard,MA - Central Massachusetts landscape painter Cynthia Woehrle studied traditional painting techniques with George Gabin while attending the Montserrat College of Art in the early 1990s; she’s remained true to the style while creating her own marketable niche with atmospheric and moody works that capture the changing seasons and iconic features of the locations she portrays. In recent years, Woehrle’s found worthy venues to display her work, including Fruitlands, where she was part of its “Visceral Murmurs” exhibition in 2012, and Martha’s Vineyard Art Association’s Old Sculpin Gallery, where she spent last summer as a gallery assistant and became a MVAA member. She’s one of four solo artists featured in the organization’s New Members’ Exhibition that takes place from June 13-19, which will be followed up by a second solo show later in the … [Read more...] about CORNERED: CYNTHIA WOEHRLE AT OLD SCULPIN GALLERY, MARTHA’S VINEYARD

Sarah Meyers Brent: Primal Garden at the Walter Feldman Gallery, Boston
By Sarah Kinkade Boston, MA - Life is a complicated mess: there are ups and downs, joys and disappointments, smooth sailings and rough landings. It can be both ugly and beautiful, yet, the view of beauty generally prevails as almost everyone can agree that ‘life is beautiful.’ This sentiment is captured in the artwork of Sarah Meyers Brent. Brent’s inspiration mainly comes from her own life as she works through various situations and events, finding beauty in untraditional ways. Within her drawings and sculptural paintings, she embraces the ugliness of things while highlighting the hidden prettiness underneath it all. And yes, many of her paintings go beyond the standard definition of the word and enter the category of sculpture as they ooze and explode off the canvas. Many of her materials are organic — for example, flowers and dirt — mixed with acrylic to help give it shape. … [Read more...] about Sarah Meyers Brent: Primal Garden at the Walter Feldman Gallery, Boston
The Transformative Art of Martin Bridge
By Natalia Chilcote Roxbury, MA - The first installment of Inner Sanctum Studio’s Salon series on March 28 presented the exhibit, “The Transformative Art of Martin Bridge.” A dedicated mycologist, painter and theater instructor, Bridge’s life has been shaped by and remains rooted in visceral experiences of and participation in the natural world. A passion for the ancient networks that form the basis for Earth’s soil systems continuously inform his art and inspires him to explore new avenues in his work. At the heart of his art is a personal transformation that he underwent years ago while exploring the forest with friends. A chance encounter with the root systems in the ground led him into a deeper interest in mycelial colonies and their roles in aggregating nutrients and the speed of plant decomposition within terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The writings of famous … [Read more...] about The Transformative Art of Martin Bridge
Celebrating International Women’s Day at IBA Gallery
By Natalia Chilcote Boston, MA - In celebration of International Women's Day, visiting the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts to view the exhibit, "Mujeres: Poetic Revelations of Our Lives," while artists Silvia Lopez Chavez and Nora Valdez were both in attendance. Against the white walls of the IBA Gallery, bright shades of pink, turquoise and green surround Silvia Lopez Chavez's canvassed face as she puffs out her cheeks in harsh concentration. The kaleidoscope of tiny air 'bubbles' escaping her pursed lips capture the moment just before she gives in. On the wall to the right, a video loops, replaying Chelsea residents engaged in similar activity. Joining them as well as the life-sized portraits of nine of these Chelsea residents, Chavez's self-portrait, "Hold Your Breath', serves as a point of conversation surrounding the dysfunctional structures that have created inadequate … [Read more...] about Celebrating International Women’s Day at IBA Gallery
Boriana Kantcheva: Likely Stories at 13FOREST Gallery
By Sarah Kinkade Arlington, MA - “Monsters, ghost stories, horror movies and dreams have fascinated me since childhood and now serve as reference points,” said Boriana Kantcheva, whose “Likely Stories” exhibit has recently opened at 13FOREST Gallery in Arlington. The show features paintings that fuse people and animals and is inspired by fairy tales and folklore of Eastern Europe. Despite the common theme throughout her collection, every painting is unique and especially eye-catching. The different uses of color and subject matter guarantees that the spectator will have plenty to look at. What is truly fascinating about her work is the amount of detail that goes into each piece; the more one looks at her paintings, the more detail is discovered, but the painting never becomes overwhelming. Working primarily with gouache, an opaque watercolor paint, Boriana uses immensely tiny … [Read more...] about Boriana Kantcheva: Likely Stories at 13FOREST Gallery
