By Meghan Richter Image: "Festival Host BCA's Current Exhibition: Thu Kim Vu's Fixed/Fluxed" Driving through the green mountains of Vermont is always a treat, especially in the summer when the city of Burlington is vibrant with engaging activity. This past weekend’s temperatures were about 75 degrees on average, sunny and breezy — the perfect escape from the sweltering heat of Boston. I arrived in Burlington in time for the Festival of Fools, a yearly event that is produced by Burlington City Arts. The streets were decorated with multi- colored balls that were strung together in a circus- tent formation over the intersecting streets on Church. Up and down the street, and on the green at the corner of Church and Main streets, there were varied performances ranging from dance to live music and comedy acts. Street performers traveled from all over the northeast to share their … [Read more...] about Far from Foolish: Family Fun at the Festival of Fools

Bob Dilworth, Alaina Mahoney, Marty McCorkle and Erin Starr at Gallery Z Providence
By Kristin Wissler At Gallery Z, there’s an untitled exhibition comprised of the works of four very different artists: Bob Dilworth, Alaina Mahoney, Marty McCorkle and Erin Starr. Gallery director Bérge Ara Zobian told me that he chose the artists because of their “ability to work in 2D and 3D mediums.” “They’re all serious, strong painters,” Zobian added. “They come from different backgrounds, different studies.” Bob Dilworth’s most striking piece is “Untitled,” a work so large it has a whole wall to itself. It’s a cacophonous yet beautiful piece, splotched all over in warm reds and oranges, with cooler-toned pieces of 3D reflective material carving a path across the canvas. In his bio alongside the piece, he says that his “hope is to capture textures, feelings and patterns of life.” The business and color in “Untitled” do a good job of representing the human experience. Alaina … [Read more...] about Bob Dilworth, Alaina Mahoney, Marty McCorkle and Erin Starr at Gallery Z Providence
Wildlife: Trading and Conservation at the ISB Gallery at the Rhode Island School of Design
By Kristin Wissler On July 14, I attended the reception for “Wildlife: Trading and Conservation” at the Rhode Island School of Design’s ISB Gallery. I was happy to go, for I’ve always loved the animal world and everything in it. The exhibit, created by RISD in collaboration with Creature Conserve and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), is meant to illustrate the effect of global trade on endangered animals. Dr. Lucy Spelman, RISD faculty member and founder of Creature Conserve, calls the exhibition, “a selection of highly personal artwork that is both informed by the facts and emotionally charged.” Indeed, the art pieces featured create a host of emotions in the viewer. The first piece to greet the viewer entering the exhibition is “Tortuga,” a beautiful sculpture of a turtle with coral on its back. As the artist, Alexandra Alemany, explains on the work’s … [Read more...] about Wildlife: Trading and Conservation at the ISB Gallery at the Rhode Island School of Design
Identity and Community at the Crossroads
CCMOA’s Summer of Storytelling by Brian Goslow If you grew up in New England in the 1950s and ‘60s, one of summer’s most memorable experiences was a journey to Storyland Cape Cod, a magical village that stirred many a child’s imagination. This summer, a modern version will arise at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, thanks to Susan Danton, owner and director of Miller White Fine Arts on Route 134 in South Dennis, Mass., who has playfully crafted “At the Crossroads: Six Narratives at the Intersection of Identity and Community,” an exhibition featuring a half-dozen unique artistic experiences. The show is part of CCMOA’s “A Summer of Storytelling,” also featuring “William Hemmerdinger: The Duxbury Merchant.” Danton has assembled a group of artists who through their work tell stories relevant to issues going on in our world today: the need for family and friends, community, … [Read more...] about Identity and Community at the Crossroads
Ogunquit Art Association
Members Shine in Summer by Greg Morell Sometimes the stars align for an arts group. Such was the case for the venerable Ogunquit Art Association, currently celebrating seven decades of painters and sculptors drawing inspiration from the dramatic coastline of southern Maine. In the founding years of the organization, the collective of artists was bequeathed the largesse of the Ogunquit Playhouse — a very desirable parcel of Perkins Cove real estate in which to build their home. They then secured plans for their smartly designed showplace, the Barn Gallery. Make no mistake, the gracefully appointed edifice that welcomes visitors to the vacation hamlet of the Cove bears very little resemblance to a barn. The complex is favored with 4,000 feet of indoor exhibition space divided into three separate galleries, an outdoor walled sculpture garden that ambles around the perimeter … [Read more...] about Ogunquit Art Association
Museum of the Massachusetts Landscape
The Trustees' Public Art Initiative by Meredith Cutler World’s End … The Old Manse … names that ring of landmarks on a fictional map. Look at a map of Massachusetts, and you’ll discover that these are very real destinations. Located in seaside Hingham and historic Concord, respectively, World’s End and The Old Manse are just two of 116 properties managed by the not-for-profit conservation and preservation group, The Trustees of Reservations. In celebration of 125 years of land conservancy and historical site stewardship, The Trustees have launched a two-year public art initiative titled “Art and the Landscape.” The project is curated by Boston-based independent curator Pedro Alonzo in the “museum of the Massachusetts landscape — wild nature herself,” as described by Trustees President and CEO Barbara Erickson at a launch event and public art forum held in early … [Read more...] about Museum of the Massachusetts Landscape
