When you think “portrait artist” and the likes of Leonardo da Vinci (“The Mona Lisa”) or Rembrandt (“Self Portrait”) surface, you’re way off base. If you think Vincent Van Gogh (“Self-portrait in Straw Hat”), you’re getting closer. If you think Gustav Klimt (“Portrait of Adele Block Bauer”) you’re staying on track. But when you say “portrait painting” in the context of Seacoast (New Hampshire/Maine) artist Amy Ford, you need to capture an artistic expression more like Chuck Close (pixelated collages) or Picasso (Cubism and fragmentation). And yet, Amy Ford is none of these. She exudes her own poetic essence via her canvases and boards. Ford’s formal training began in the studio of Italian artist, Silvestro Pistolesi, where he instilled the classical Italian sensibilities and discipline so apparent in his work, and early on reflected in Ford’s work. And while Ford immersed herself in … [Read more...] about OUR SHARED HUMANITY: AMY FORD’S IN RELATIONSHIP EXHIBITION AT MCLAUGHLIN-HILLS BARN GALLERY

MILTON ACADEMY’S NESTO GALLERY PRESENTS SCULPTOR MURRAY “MAC” DEWART & MIKEL GLASS’ PARITY EXHIBITION
Founded in 1798, Milton Academy, based in Milton, Massachusetts, has graduated, and educated, an impressive student body — with too many big-name alumni to count. The artists in 2021’s final and only shows are no exception. On a yearly basis, Milton typically holds six or seven professional shows in the Nesto Gallery — the primary audience consisting of its visual arts students as well as being open to the public for visitation. But, with the COVID-19 pandemic, only two exhibitions were held for the academic year, and unfortunately, they are closed to outside visitors. Ian Torney, Chair of the Visual Arts Department, executive director of the Nesto Gallery, artist, educator and a Milton alumnus himself (Class of 1982), made the call to feature two alumni artists for the shows, strengthening the internal community of Milton Academy during these difficult times. Sculptor Murray … [Read more...] about MILTON ACADEMY’S NESTO GALLERY PRESENTS SCULPTOR MURRAY “MAC” DEWART & MIKEL GLASS’ PARITY EXHIBITION
REVITALIZED AT THE STOVEFACTORY ART GALLERY
The colors pop off the wall and hit you right in the face — in a good way. The shades of spring and whatever your heart desires fit right in at the Artists’ Group of Charlestown’s 2021 Spring Art Exhibition, “Revitalized,” StoveFactory Gallery; and with all the windows open, the warm spring night filled the room. Before I walked into the exhibit, I had the pleasure of talking to one of the artists, Deidre Tao, about the show. She was excited for me to enjoy the art and told me to take my time as there was so much to see. She was not wrong. What I saw were landscapes, abstract paintings, cyanotypes, and even textiles. I was able to experience what gave new life to other people. Whether it was “Vineyard Cove” by Tao, a pastel sky over a beach scene, or botanical prints on silk by Pat McSweeney. “October” by McSweeney was novel to me and the way the artists captured the color … [Read more...] about REVITALIZED AT THE STOVEFACTORY ART GALLERY
SILENT PRESENCE AT HERA GALLERY
Hera Gallery’s “Silent Presence” exhibition opened on June 10 with limited hours. In this exhibition, which physically closed on August 1, four women artists used photography, sculptures and paintings to reflect upon the human perspectives of the man-made and natural world around us. You can see the entire exhibition online at https://www.heragallery.org/silent-presence. The title of the exhibit appears to be a nod towards the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has changed our lifestyles. In putting together the show, Molly Kaderka, Viera Levitt, Elizabeth Lind and Roberta Richman became familiar with each other’s work and found the common thread of nature’s presence within each other’s pieces. Painter Kaderka’s work in the exhibit expresses the theme of how humans relate to the natural world and find meaning and connection with it. Growing up in the Catholic Church surrounded by … [Read more...] about SILENT PRESENCE AT HERA GALLERY
ART IN PLACE ONLINE AT STANDARD SPACE
In mid-March, the art scene all over New England — and slowly afterwards, much of the United States — came to a standstill — or at least its institutions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many galleries moved to appointment-only viewings. An overwhelming number temporarily closed altogether. Cultural backbones like the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston are closed to the public, with its date for reopening being extended to further and further dates. The communal feeling that art brings has been thrown out of synch. Even imagining the empty halls of museums or a gallery with its lights out brings a disconcerting mood. But some institutions are defying that mood. Standard Space in Sharon, Connecticut, has launched “Art in Place,” a rolling virtual exhibition focused on art relating to the ongoing pandemic. The idea for its development came to curator Theo Coulombe two weeks ago: “My art … [Read more...] about ART IN PLACE ONLINE AT STANDARD SPACE
