Lisa Houck + Ross Ozer ‘s “Patterned Worlds,” on view through May 3 at Concord Art: Concord Center for the Visual Art, 37 Lexington Road, Concord. Massachusetts, features “Two artists building color rich worlds through organic and geometric patterns.”
Both Houck and Ozer inhabit the “more is more” school of art. Houck with thousands of tesserae brilliantly set in each piece, Ozer with thousands of encaustic dots that have their own geometric patten behind the color patterns they create.
Imagining Houck’s studio with all the bins of glass pieces, organized by color, shape, size is mind blowing. Her ability to create gorgeous nature inspired compositions with glass and handmade ceramic elements is legion. The results are magical worlds of visual delight, with titles that are pure inventive literature. “A Rare Elm with Fiddlehead Friends,” “Windblown Warbler,” “A Compatible Couple,” “A New Couple in the Neighborhood,” “A Botanist’s Dream,” and “Those Blue Days.” Prepare to be spellbound.
Ozer’s series “A Drunkard’s Path” uses title to add levity to the highly controlled geometric patterns he creates with color and texture. Ozer works in series, uses variations of color combinations within a repeating design: “Chromatic Conversations”, “Kaleidoscope”. “Waxing Bauhaus Oceanic I and II” are especially interesting, as the pattern in each varies using the same pleasing blue and green combinations in four quilt inspired squares.
