Have you ever wanted to learn a new or different creative skill? Do you already have skills requiring tools/equipment you don’t have? Looking to join a community of do-it-yourself makers? Want to learn woodworking, photography, screen printing, jewelry making, fabrication, sewing/embroidery, metal working, laser cutting or 3D printing? Consider joining one of many maker spaces across Massachusetts — or try out a bunch!
Most maker spaces offer a monthly membership with various flexibility and access at different price points. Most offer, or require, training in various crafts on how to use tools and equipment safely. Some hold member mixers so creative DIY folks can meet each other. Here’s a few in different parts of the state.
Tinkerhaus Community Makerspace in Gloucester is open to all ages and all abilities. “We run a lot of children’s programming and experiences for adults with disabilities,” said director Mary McDonald. “We have about 25 active monthly members, but another 100 plus users. We do a lot of classes and workshops.” Tinkerhouse offers 3D printers and other equipment, but, McDonald said, “most of our members are interested in woodworking or textiles. People really want to use their hands.”
In the short-term, Tinkerhaus is seeking to hire a paid half-time director, but, McDonald explained, “our mission for the far future is to be a thriving, solvent community with a large catalog of classes and meetup groups.”
